Remember the very first dance you went to? Chances are it was in elementary school. It was awkward. Boys on one side of the school gym…girls on the other. Anti-perspirants were failing miserably.
But it was a rite of passage.
An on-line petition is circulating through the Maritimes this week, after a Cape Breton school board banned school dances for Grades 6 nthrough 8. The administration feels that some 10 and 11 year-olds aren’t ready for the “social pressures” that dances can conjure up.
Hmmmm. I’m pretty sure there’s already drama in middle school. Isn’t it the staff’s job to ensure that students understand that it’s to be a “fun” event…and to do whatever they can to foster participation and fun?
Should school dances be banned for Grades 6 through 8? IS 10 or 11 too young to attend such an event? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
