Meet Lucy – – the 4-legged, 4 month-old furry bundle of joy that left the Peterborough Humane Society late last week to become a member of our family at her new forever home.
It’s almost ironic that her adoption happened over Thanksgiving. We recently had to say goodbye to our beagle, a loyal member of our family for 15 years. Her absence has been missed in our home.
And Lucy’s story really begins with her mom – – a bit of a local celebrity.
When the Peterborough Humane Society first found Lucy’s mom (Sally) in Selwyn in late May, she had more than 100 porcupine quills in her face and mouth. And, she was pregnant with her fourth litter.
On June 13th, she had 10 healthy puppies (including Lucy), but while living in foster care, Sally pushed open a window and jumped, landing on a stake which impaled her. She was treated at the Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic, and received 44 stitches to close the foot-long wound. (As you may recall, the Peterborough Humane Society made an appeal for personal and private donations to help cover the cost of the procedure. And Peterborough animal lovers responded overwhelmingly).
Not only am I thankful that this little dog has blessed our lives with love and energy; I express my gratitude on Lucy’s behalf that she’s even alive. Every year more than 1,300 animals arrive at the local shelter; some require homes, and other require life-saving surgery and long-term care. The Ptbo Humane Society receives no government funding.
If you feel that you can provide a loving home for a rescue dog, please look into it. If not (and face it – it is a huge commitment of time and energy), please consider helping the humane society with a financial donation, enabling them to carry on with the amazing (and tireless) work they do.
FYI – little Lucy is adjusting well to her new life with us – – EVERYbody loves Lucy – – everybody except our cat.
He’s not sure about this. Hissing…making himself at home in the dog’s new wire crate – – and (generally) being a jerk about it!
So if you have ANY tips on how to speed up the process of getting Mister to warm up to Lucy – – PLEASE….let me know!
