As of January 1st, some new laws came into effect here in Ontario. .
In case you weren’t aware, drivers (including cyclists) must stop and yield the whole roadway at pedestrian crossovers; and, at school crossings where there is a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign. These rules apply at pedestrian crossovers (which we have only a handful of here in Peterborough) identified with specific signs, road markings and lights. Intersections controlled by traffic lights are considered “crosswalks”..and the new law doesn’t apply to them – – unless a school crossing guard is present.
We’ll have to wait and see how strictly the new rule will be enforced; however, it’s one of those laws that makes perfect sense, (hopefully) reducing the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians.
