Today, a barrage of controversy erupted on Facebook after Rocky Horror Picture Show creator Richard O’Brien weighed in on transgender issues.
To put this in context, O’Brien was replying when questioned how he felt about comments made by feminist author Germaine Greer. She said last week that you can’t turn a man into a woman by simply lopping off a body part. In other words, transgender surgery doesn’t change the gender.
O’Brien is being blasted for agreeing with her. Of course, they’re both being blamed for degrading and devaluing those men who choose transgender surgery. I don’t think that’s what O’Brien intended at all.
Consider that he has often talked of himself as being 70 per cent male and 30 per cent female. He has said while he ticket the “m” box for male, he wishes there was an “o” box for “other.” He feels neither male nor female, and has spoken publicly and loudly about the blurred gender lines.
Seems to me O’Brien is being horrible in his agreement with Greer. Isn’t he saying something profound: that we should all be genderless? What say you?
