Officials in Mississauga have decided to rename a Toronto-area park, to show the public the municipality is not honouring a drunk driver who killed three young children and their grandfather last year.
A Mississauga councillor – Sue McFadden – says Marco Muzzo Memorial Woods was named after the grandfather of the man sentenced this week to 10 years in prison for impaired driving causing death.
Apparently, dozens of constituents contacted her asking for a change.
The tragedy of the family, however, will not be recognized by renaming the part with the addition of “Senior.” What would really have made a difference would have been to rename the park after the Neville-Lakes. With an entire generation of the family gone, it would have gone a small way to recognizing the tragic circumstances and reminding the public of the horrific effects of impaired driving.
