Summertime is in full swing – if you’ll pardon the pun – and it’s the perfect time for outdoor activities. So many things to do, like going walking or hiking on one of the many local trails, cruising in a Jeep, camping, going swimming, chasing Pokemon in places you probably shouldn’t be, taking in a baseball game, hosting a sidewalk BBQ, playing drums in the middle of the highway, or going flying in a wingsuit. Or you could, you know, hit the golf course, as is one of my favourite summertime things to do.
Anytime I do get the chance, I always play fairly abysmally. When you only get out once or twice a year, it’s pretty hard to actually get good at it. Not to mention the time it takes to actually get in a round of golf. However, Bubba Watson, who happens to be the #5 ranked golfer in the world, has been working on something to make a round of golf go a bit quicker: A jetpack.
Imagine all the looks you’d get flying this thing from hole to hole – especially on days where you’re instructed to stick to the cart paths only!
That thing can fly up to 3,000 feet! I don’t know about you folks, but I don’t think I’d be brave enough to take it up that high. However, as Watson points out in the video, those who do dare strap themselves into the jetpack can get a leg up on the other players by getting a birds-eye view of each hole, to formulate a strategy while the other golfers in your party are still trying to find the hole from the tee box.
Already thinking about how you’re going to show up your friends with one of these things? Not so fast – It’s not available for sale yet, and when (if) it does make it to that stage, you can easily expect to shell out at least $200,000… And that doesn’t even include the pilot training you’ll need to fly it. Watson hasn’t even flown it yet – he’s apparently third in line for training. You can find out more about the BW-Air HERE.
This isn’t the first crazy take on the classic golf cart Bubba Watson has been involved in. You may remember a couple years ago when he, once again with Oakley, created a golf cart hovercraft!
I think the hovercraft golf cart is especailly cool because, from the looks of it, it doesn’t require any crazy training to pilot it, and it can go pretty much anywhere. As they say in the video, it has a footprint pressure of 33 times less than the human foot, so you could park this thing smack in the middle of the green without damaging it, if you wanted to… Though I wouldn’t try it unless you want to deal with an irate course ranger!
Oh, AND you can actually get your hands on one of these (or at least something very, very similar) – and all you need is $58,000. Hammacher Schlemmer does have a hovercraft golf cart listed for sale in their online catalog! Or, if you want to prowl the course in style like Batman, might I recommend their Gotham Golf Cart?
