The harp is an instrument that is most commonly associated with classical music, and I think also traditional music from numerous regions of Asia. It’s not terribly often it gets associated with pop music – but there are plenty of harpists out there who seem to love covering the latest hits on their harps.
This blog post is kind of in the same vein as the blog series I do for our brother station, The Wolf 101.5, called Patchy’s Inappropriate Instrumentals, where I feature covers of popular songs done on unusual or uncommon instruments. You can find the latest installment of that HERE.
I’ve found a bunch of videos of people playing all kinds of songs on their harps that we play regularly here on FRESH.
We’ll start with a fella named Gerard Carroll, from Northern Ireland. Here he is covering Walk The Moon‘s Shut Up and Dance:
Viviane Nüscheler has a few of these videos of her covering pop tunes on her harp on YouTube. Here’s a couple:
Aviicii‘s Wake Me Up:
Passenger‘s Let Her Go:
Justin Bieber‘s What Do You Mean (which I’m sure is what he thought when he found out he was supposed to be at the Bowmanville Zoo this weekend):
Zayn‘s Pillow Talk:
Amélie Guiboux is another harpist that has uploaded a number of pop song covers. Here’s some of hers.
Miley Cyrus‘s Wrecking Ball:
Katy Perry‘s Firework:
Katy Perry‘s Dark Horse:
John Legend‘s All Of Me:
Sam Smith‘s Stay With Me:
Sam Smith‘s I Know I’m Not The Only One:
Taylor Swift‘s Shake It Off:
Meghan Trainor‘s All About That Bass:
Ed Sheeran‘s Thinking Out Loud:
Maroon 5‘s Sugar:
Ellie Goulding‘s Love Me Like You Do:
Shawn Mendes‘s Stitches:
And last but not least, Sia‘s Cheap Thrills:
It kinda makes me want to learn to play the harp, I just can’t imagine the effort that must go into learning to play it. It totally pays off, though, because I think these are all pretty awesome covers, and can make your favourite Fresh songs sound like lullabies.
Speaking of… If you’ve ever wanted to lull your young children to sleep with some of your favourite songs, you should check out the Twinkle Twinkle Little Rock Star series, which creates lullaby versions of songs by a TON of different artists. Go ahead and look around their site by clicking on their name above.
