That’s right, a cheque for $1 – issued to me in April 1975 by Broadcast News (BN) for a story I filed when I was working part time in news at the time. I never cashed it…in fact, I didn’t think I still had it until today.
When someone sent it to me.
Let me explain. I’m also a writer, and about 10 years ago I was researching what became two curriculum-based books on the life of former PM Lester B. Pearson, after whom the Toronto airport is named and who once lived in Peterborough for a few years when he was a kid.
I must have used this cheque (for a whole $1) as a bookmark in one of the volumes of books I checked out of the Peterborough Public library for research purposes.
And that was that until today, when I get a letter from a nice local gent named Mark, who found my little cheque tucked into the book he had just been reading.
He sent it back to me today.
Thank you, Mark! Lester B. “Mike” Pearson was quite the fella. And I’ll try to spend that $1 cheque wisely…
