Here is why Kaleb was nominated by his teacher, Tracey Boyd.
Every time I hear the ad for “Kids with Class” Kaleb comes to my mind. Kaleb is a student in my grade 3/4 class at Havelock-Belmont Public school. I had the pleasure of being his grade 2 teacher and getting him back this year for grade 4 is absolutely a pleasure for me. Kaleb is the boy who does the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. In our class, we have a year long kindness project that focuses on changing the world through kindness. I cannot think of a better ambassador for this project than Kaleb. He constantly goes above and beyond what I would ever expect a 9-year-old to do. Kaleb treats every single person he encounters with respect, kindness and politeness. I often get notes from supply teachers mentioning how kind he was during the day. Teachers that cover other subjects regularly remark on what a great person he is. Kaleb is not only liked, but respected by all of his peers. He willingly works with anyone in our class and everyone wants to be his partner. Kaleb is most definitely a leader in our classroom and school, but he is not a loud leader, he is the quiet leader that sometimes goes unnoticed. Almost daily Kaleb will sweep our classroom, put up other students’ chairs, putting away supplies or tidying up messes, even those he did not make. Kaleb goes about these tasks quietly. He does not seek, nor require recognition of any type for what he does. Most 9-year-olds tidy a mess and then rush to tell me, not Kaleb. He does it simply because it is the right thing to do as previously stated. Aside from being an amazing classroom citizen, Kaleb is an accomplished athlete. He is an outstanding hockey player and has deked this teacher out more than once on the soccer field. He tried every sport the school offers and always displays impeccable sportsmanship and ensures that all team members feel like they have an important role. I remember one time I attended a Havelock Hawks hockey game in which Kaleb scored 4 goals. Talking to him after the game I remarked “4 goals, wow, superstar” and he looked up at me with a huge grin on his face and said, “Isn’t my team awesome Miss Boyd, we all played so great!.” He is that humble. After scoring 4 goals he put the emphasis back on his team and not on himself. On top of that Kaleb is a dedicated student and an outstanding big brother to 3 younger brothers! At a time when there is so much focus on achievement, I think it is equally important to focus on kids who still do the right thing just because. Kaleb is polite, kind, respectful, a leader, funny, a good friend and a great big brother. It is for these reasons, among many others that I think he is a true representation of a “Kid with Class”. Thanks
