I was pretty spoiled as a kid. Ever since I moved out on my own and have had to do all my dishes by hand, I’ve come to realize how much I really appreciated that magical box that dirty dishes go into and clean ones come out of. Of course, at the time I was bummed (like any lazy youngster/teenager would be) about the fact that it was my job to empty the clean dishes out of the dishwasher and put them away where they belong. If only I knew then how easy I really had it.
Of course, I was asked to wash the odd dishes that weren’t dishwasher-safe by hand. More often than not, I didn’t do the best job. I don’t want to say it was on purpose so that I wouldn’t get asked to do it again (typical man move, I know), but that might have been part of it… I probably also didn’t really know what I was doing, likely subscribing to this way of doing things:
Fortunately, somewhere along the way I learned how to do dishes properly… Because as soon as I moved out on my own for the first time, scenes like this one became a regular occurrence for me:

I know, I know. All those dishes and only one sink! How did I do it?! Carefully and with much patience.
Now I don’t know about your dishwasher, but the one that was in my parents’ house when I was growing up sounded like there was a wave pool going on inside anytime I walked by while it was on. All I could picture was the entire dishwasher filling up with water and being sloshed around inside. That’d surely get the dishes, right? However, every time my step-mom opened up the dishwasher mid-cycle to throw another dish or two in, there was no torrent of soapy dishwater rushing out of it. Everything was soaked and dripping water, but no giant pool inside.
And of course there’s always certain dishes that might not get completely clean in the dishwasher. If you’ve ever wondered why that is, you won’t after seeing this video. I gotta say, I’m a little surprised by how little actually goes on inside those things. Have a look:
Seriously? That’s it? No wonder you’ll sometimes pull out dishes that still have food stuck to them.
Mind you, there are different models of dishwashers on the market that have different features. For example, this one has a spinning sprayer thing in the middle of the two racks, in addition to (I’m assuming) one underneath, and perhaps one on top? At any rate, it looks a little more intense inside:
For those of you who have nothing better to do right now than sit and watch a 42-minute video depicting a dishwasher cycle in real-time, you’re in luck. There’s one of those on YouTube too:
So there you go, now you know what goes on inside your dishwasher. Now if you don’t have a dishwasher and are wondering how to best do the dishes in a quick and efficient manner, I’d recommend taking a page out of this guy’s book:
But maybe not this one, which is about as accurate a portrayal of my youth as I’ve found:
And who knows, if you get one of those fancy sprayer things (or just grab your garden hose and bring it into the kitchen) and practice real hard, maybe you’ll be able to wash dishes as quickly as this guy one day!
Because you know, it’s important to have goals.
