When I think of wookiees, silence is just about the last thing I think of. I mean, just listen to Chewbacca:
Not too long ago, a video compilation of things that sound like Chewbacca went up on YouTube. From what I can see, that video has since been taken down, but you can still read my blog about it, and see how the studio door here at Fresh Radio kinda sounds like Chewie when you close it at just the right speed.
So, given that wookiees are known for being loud, mentioning one in the same sentence as the words “Silent Night” seems like a bit of an oxymoron, don’t you think?
However, thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can now enjoy a rendition of the Christmas classic courtesy of our old pal Chewbacca. For added fun, turn on the YouTube closed captioning!
Now the story behind that video. The idea for for Christmas with Chewbacca first started with web developer Scott Andersen in 1999, when he wanted to “pay tribute” to a CD the company he worked for at the time had just put out: Christmas with Paul Todd. Originally he shared it around the office, and his coworkers got a laugh. A few years later, it showed up on YTMND, without any credit to Andersen. It’s been shared around plenty of times without any credit since then. You can read the full story HERE.
With Andersen’s blessing, James Covenant (who created this excellent Star Trek “Let It Snow” video) recreated this classic complete with video for your enjoyment.
Be sure to share this with the Star Wars fans in your life, and remember… Let the wookiee win.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
