I’ve heard some jokes made about The Oscars, referring to them as an awards show for all the movies you didn’t see this year. Unless you’re a total film buff who keeps up with all the new releases, chances are that you may not have seen many of the films that get awarded.
One of the more decorated films at this year’s Oscars was La La Land. It took home the awards for Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Director, Best Original Music Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
It looked briefly like they were going to win Best Picture too, but then this happened:
Well, La La Land is back in the headlines for a considerably LESS awkward reason now.
It’s prom season, which means there’s likely a few teenagers out there sending hail-mary prom invitations to their favourite celebrities, because… Well, you never know! There are a few stories of big stars going to prom with young folks just because they asked.
17-year-old aspiring filmmaker Jacob Staudenmaier is one such teenager. He went all-out with a bunch of friends and classmates to ask La La Land‘s leading lady and Oscar winner Emma Stone with this video, which recreates the opening scene of the film, but with the lyrics altered to extend his invitation:
Jeez, you know… He does look a little bit like Ryan Gosling.
Now originally, my plan was to put a YouTube video of that opening scene as it appears in the film here to illustrate the similarities, but… Well, most Hollywood studios don’t like having their films on YouTube for the whole world to view for free. So there are no such videos.
If you haven’t seen the film, however, this video shot by director Damien Chizelle showing the rehearsals for the scene gives you a pretty good idea of what it was like, and it also includes a small preview of how it actually looked in the film:
So, did the young filmmaker get himself a prom date?
Well, no. However, I would imagine most celebrities who receive unwanted prom requests from people they have no interest in meeting just ignore said requests. Emma Stone ain’t about that life, though. She sent back a letter outlining why she can’t make it:
Jacob, thanks for making the greatest proposal I have ever received. I can’t tell you what an honor that was and how much I smiled through that entire beautifully orchestrated video. I’m in London working, but I hope you have the best time at prom, and I’m grateful you thought of me. Thank you. P.S. I do see Gosling around the eyes. Love, Emma.
So even without the date, that’s gotta be a pretty big self-esteem boost, no? I mean, not only does Emma Stone agree that you kinda look like Ryan Gosling, she even signed it “Love, Emma.” SCORE!
Staudenmaier says he doesn’t plan to extend the invitation to Olive Garden to anyone else, and will instead be attending prom with his buddies. I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole story lands him the Prom King title though!
