With the amount of heavy rain that we’ve recently received, it seems like dandelion season is here with a bumper crop this year.
And there are two schools of thoughts that homeowners have on these flowering plants – – live with them…or wage an exhausting war on them, which can often become an exercise in futility (especially if you have a neighbour that doesn’t want to spend that kind of time or energy to get rid of them from their lawn).
We’ve all seen the neighbourhood lawn manicurist too – – painstakingly pulling out each dandelion by the root for hours on end…or (worse yet) applying banned pesticides under the cover of the darkness of night – – all in the name of aesthetics.
However, we’re now learning to accept this yearly invasion of dandelions, and help out other members of the animal kingdom by doing so. Taking a couple of weeks off from mowing the lawn this month (or at least raising the cutting height of the mower) will benefit bees, butterflies and beetles feasting on the yellow flowers. Goldfinches and house sparrows love the seeds.
Plus, we’ll have time for more interesting activities other than mowing the lawn and pulling weeds – – like sitting on the back deck with an icy cold spiked ice tea, right??!! Cheers!
