I sincerely hope you never have to experience what it’s like to have your car stolen. I’ve never experienced it myself, though I’ve had my car broken into and things stolen from it numerous times. That alone left me feeling pretty violated, so I can’t imagine what losing an entire car would be like – although I did joke at the time that if they had taken the car, at least it would be easier to find.
At any rate, it’s not something you can really prepare for. You can’t work out a scenario in your head of what you’d do if someone tried to steal your car, because you never really know how it’s going to happen.
In the case of Melissa Smith of Milwaukee, that moment came as she was pumping gas into her white Subaru. As you can see in the surveillance video, a black Cadillac pulls up, and the thief jumps out of the back seat, crouches down, and gets into the driver’s seat of her SUV. Have a look:

As crazy as that is, what happened next was arguably crazier – she jumped on the hood of her own car as it started to take off! I’m amazed that she would take such a risk with her life – the thief could have easily sped off and swerved, throwing her off the car onto the ground.
There were plenty of tweets basically saying that if there was no kid in the car, it wasn’t worth her risking her life like that – that’s what insurance is for.
But as she’s said in an interview, she had a “This isn’t happening to me today” moment, but what really got her was when the thief looked directly at her and laughed.

She straight up admitted that it wasn’t the safest or smartest thing, but that she was just following her instincts – I think we’ve all been there.
It was amazing that nobody got hurt at all – especially with the car rolling uncontrolled out into the road until she was able to get in and throw it into park.

I guess this serves as good a reminder as any to always take your keys with you when you get out of your car – no matter how short a time you’ll be out of it. And it might even be good measure just to lock it, so it’s considerably tougher for any potential thieves to get in or even grab anything out of the car.
Stay vigilant out there, friends.
