It was a David vs Goliath kind of event. And a sold-out crowd in Montreal last night got to see 18 year-old Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill turf tennis superstar Rafael Nadal from the Rogers Cup.
A night after Denis knocked out the 2009 U-S Open winner, he was the winner of a thrilling third-round match against this tournament’s top seed.
Denis says it’s a dream come true. He woke up yesterday morning, and the first thing he saw was a poster of his idol Rafael Nadal on the wall. He says he went into the match thinking, “I’m just going to play loose and enjoy the experience – – then go home.”
But by the time the second set was underway, Denis says he started feeling “Hey. I might actually be able to beat this guy.”
And he did! An 18 year-old from Canada…knocking out the top seed at the Rogers Cup…with Wayne Gretzky and Olympic swimming star Penny Oleksiak cheering for him from the stands! What a night!
His victory makes him the youngest quarter-finalist at a Masters Series tournament ever, when he faces Adrian Mannarino of France tonight. Go Denis!!
