I’m not the type of person who gets really into TV commercials or anything like that. Of course, during the Super Bowl (or the Big Game, if we’re concerned about trademark infringement) it’s fun to watch all the huge budget commercials… But I can’t think of any other time where I will sit and intently watch commercial after commercial.
Every now and then, though, something comes along where I can’t turn away – I just have to sit and watch.
In addition to working here on the radio, I’ve also worked at Domino’s Pizza in town for about 10 years. Shameless Plug Alert: Domino’s just opened it’s third store in Peterborough, at 1774 Lansdowne St. W (the old 7-Eleven building). Come on in and give us a try!
Anyway, this shot-for-shot remake of Ferris Bueller that Domino’s created earlier this year really caught my attention. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things, you’ll recognize the star of the commercial – Joe Keery.
It’s one thing to watch the commercial, but to watch it side-by-side with the film itself is actually pretty crazy:
My two favourite things about the commercial: How he says “Hi, I just ordered Domino’s” when he goes back to talk to the suntanning girls in bikinis, and how they replaced Ferris’s dad in the movie with the actor who played Cameron Frye, Alan Ruck – still in that Red Wings jersey!
There was another Ferris Bueller-inspired commercial that Domino’s made, and actually we’re kind of going backwards chronologically if we were to compare it to the film. While the one above covers the end of his day, this one covers the morning:
I bet it would be a lot of fun to work on a commercial like that where the goal is to recreate everything shot by shot. And I gotta hand it to the marketing team at Domino’s – they found a way to make me want to eat Domino’s Pizza even more than I already do (and that’s a lot, given I’m a long-time employee).
